What’s On in Birmingham and Longbridge – August 2022

With the sun shining and the School Holidays in full swing, there’s lots going on in Birmingham and Longbridge this month, and not forgetting the end of the memorable Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Commonwealth Games

There’s been a buzz around the games for over two years, and they are now finally here! Celebrating sports and all things Birmingham, the Commonwealth Games are a celebration not to be missed. There’s a variety of events including the ‘festival’ (a range of events celebrating Birmingham and its culture) and youth programmes.

Herbert’s Yard Herb Garden

The first Sunday of every month sees the return of Herb Garden at Herbert’s Yard – an independent market that showcases artists and small businesses from the local area. This month, our very own Ballyhoo member Rebecca will be there showcasing her hand embroidery small business! Pop down to Herbert’s Yard in Longbridge on Sunday 7th August to discover local businesses and enjoy the street food vendors on offer too.

Velociraptor Show

Dinosaurs are coming to MAC (Midlands Art Centre) Birmingham! Teach Rex – a company specialising in creative workshops to ignite young minds and imaginations – is bringing their popular Velociraptor show to Birmingham on 18th August 2022. The life-like dinosaurs perform a 50 minute show that teaches children about the anatomy and life of dinosaurs.

The Festival of Quilts

In the 4 day celebration at Birmingham NEC, this festival celebrates everything from patchwork, quilting, textile galleries and competitions. What’s more, there’s lots of workshops for all the crafters out there to learn from the best in the quilting industry.

Les Miserables

Les Miserables comes to Birmingham! From 9th – 27th August, the popular musical returns to Birmingham Hippodrome. Having been seen by over 120 million people worldwide, it’s something you don’t want to miss. Alison has booked to see the show and is very excited, no doubt she will be serenading us with the songs afterwards!

Zog & the Flying Doctors

Following on from Les Miserables, there’s also plenty of shows for children and families to attend too! Zog & the Flying Doctors is coming to Birmingham Town Hall between 23rd – 28th August. In the show, Zog and his pals tend to a sunburnt mermaid, a unicorn with too many horns, and a lion with the flu, with a turn of events for Princess Pearl who finds herself being locked in the castle! Can Pearl escape the castle and prove that princesses can be doctors too? Fun for the whole family guaranteed!
