The much loved Birmingham Design Festival is returning next month, to celebrate the local, national and international design industry.
Running 9th-11th June 2022, Birmingham Design Festival is a great opportunity for like minded people to gather and share ideas and knowledge. With over 100 events and 60 speakers in venues across Birmingham, there’s something for everyone.
What is Birmingham Design Festival?
Birmingham Design Festival was founded in 2017 by designers Daniel Alcorn and Luke Tonge, before launching the first festival in 2018. Not only did it allow people and designers to come together and share knowledge and ideas, but it helped strengthen Birmingham’s reputation as a design powerhouse.
In addition to the yearly festival, Birmingham Design was founded – a resource for connecting and inspiring the design community throughout the West Midlands. The website offers help articles, job listings, events, community support and more.
2022 Theme: Freedom
This year’s theme for the event is ‘Freedom’ – exploring how design affects individuals’ freedom, as well as how the latest technology and techniques give us freedom to design.
The festival has so much to offer in just a 3 day slot, and event coordinators have sectioned these events into ‘Design Districts’ to make it easier to navigate. You can choose to spend your entire day in one district, or move between them – allowing you to make the most of the festival.
The Design Districts are:
- Graphic – including traditional print design, brand, typography, and advertising
- Digital – exploring UX design, visual effects and everything within digital experiences
- Product – including product design, interior design, fashion, textiles and architecture
- Illustration – including both traditional illustration (pen & paper) and digital illustration

One of the great benefits of Birmingham Design Festival is that all daytime talks that take place in the district hubs are free to attend – meaning that they are accessible to all. Evening events are priced between £15 and £25, with workshops priced up to £40.
What’s more, you can fit the events around your schedule, as they are run hourly with breaks in between. Events usually run at 11am-5pm, with evening events running 7pm-10pm.
Whether you’re new to design or are a design expert, Birmingham Design Festival is for everyone. Book tickets and find out more here.
