Google Workspace No Longer Supporting Password-Based Access

Google Workspace | |

From 14th March 2025, Google Workspace customers will no longer be able to access their accounts from apps using password-based authentication, and will instead need to use Open Authorisation (OAuth).

Important Details

Google will be switching off access to Less Secure Apps (LSA) that can access Google accounts with only a username and password.

OAuth allows users to grant third-party access to information without the need for sharing or revealing passwords, therefore accessing account information using a digital key rather than a username and password.

POP and IMAP can still be enabled with apps that connect to accounts using OAuth.

The changes are coming into effect to strengthen protection against hijacking attempts, to keep accounts safe and secure.

Action Required

Google is switching off access in stages, starting from 14th March; CalDAV, CardDAV, IMAP, POP and Google Sync will no longer work when users sign in with just a password, and they will instead need to login with a more secure type of access. Therefore, all users must switch to using OAuth with third party apps to continue to allow these apps to access their email, contacts, calendar tools and other Workspace data.
