L is for

Glossary | |

By now, you’re becoming something of an expert in design and marketing with the help of our glossary series, but we still have over half of the alphabet to go. So without further ado, let’s delve into all things beginning with the letter L.

Landing Page

A landing page is a web page that a user can land on. In digital marketing, a landing page is a stand-alone page that is created specifically for a marketing campaign – such as a page that users click through to from a Google Ad or email.

Landing pages are designed to encourage users to take action, helping to increase conversion rates and lowering acquisition costs. Landing pages may have offers on them, or be a source of information relating to the Ad or email that users have clicked through from.

Laptop

A laptop is a small, portable computer with a screen and keyboard. Laptops feature an all-in-one design, with a built-in monitor, keyboard, touchpad and speakers in a lid-like layout that closes and opens. You can also connect a regular keyboard, monitor and mouse to laptops.

Laptops are great, as they are highly portable, lightweight and have the same features of a desktop computer but can be used without needing a plug.

Lead

A lead is a person or company who has shown interest in the products or services that you offer. This includes users that fill out forms, subscribe to a blog or share their contact information.

It is vital that businesses generate leads to encourage these users to become customers.

Limited

Ballyhoo is a Limited company, which is a type of business structure where the company is a legally distinct entity.

Link

Links or Hyperlinks are snippets of HTML that allow users to navigate to a new location when they click it. Links are found on web pages, social media and in emails. Links are often attached to text, but can also be attached to images and other HTML elements.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a social media platform focusing on professional networking. Users can find jobs, build connections and enhance professional relationships. Both individuals and businesses  can use LinkedIn, and it is a powerful tool to build brand awareness.

LiquidPlanner is a project management system that helps teams to plan work, featuring time estimates to communicate project schedules.

Localhost

Localhost is the friendly name used to establish a connection to the computer you’re currently working from. It allows you to access your computer as if from an external location which is  useful for software testing and security purposes.

A login page on a website is an entry page that requires user ID and authentication, providing access to part of the website. Login pages usually feature username and password fields, with a reset or forgot password option too.

Longbridge

Longbridge is home to Ballyhoo HQ. Based in Birmingham, UK, Longbridge is an area known for being the home of The Austin Motor Company and Rover. The factory made hundreds of cars over the years, also helping with both WW1 and WW2 efforts by producing armoury for the war efforts.

Unfortunately, in 2016 MG announced all car production had ceased in Longbridge – but that doesn’t mean to say that the area declined. Instead, it is now a flourishing area, reinvigorating the site to build a sustainable community. Now home to South & City College, the Innovation Centre, Longbridge Shopping and Herbert’s Yard, Longbridge is a thriving local area and community.

Lorem Ipsum

Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text that is used in graphic, print and online industries. Lorem Ipsum is used for previewing layouts and visual mockups, helping designers plan out where content will sit. Examples of where it is used include websites, product descriptions, calls to action and contact details.

It originally comes from Latin text but does not have any intelligible meaning, making it perfect in today’s world to be used simply as a placeholder.

See an example snippet of Lorem Ipsum below:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat.

Logo

A logo is a symbol that defines a business, made up of a brand mark or logotype, often along with a text tagline. Logos allow a business to portray their brand values, building brand recognition and allowing a brand to stand out from competitors.

Different from a ‘Brand’, a logo is simply a graphic symbol that identifies a company, whereas a brand is the idea consumers have when thinking of a company and its products or services.
