Our Climate Impact

Carbon Measurement & Action

Since 2022, we have subscribed to Ecologi’s Climate Action Workforce initiative to plant trees and avoid carbon. Through our ongoing Ultimate subscription, for maximum impact, we have funded over 3,000 trees, supported 50+ projects, and avoided over 300 tonnes of carbon. We also fund additional UK tree planting to support homegrown reforestation projects.

Carbon Accounting

In 2022, we began using Ecologi’s beta carbon accounting platform, Ecologi Zero. The application connected to our accounting platform to accurately calculate our associated carbon emissions under Scope 1, 2 and 3. We continued to use Ecologi Zero until mid-2025 when the beta programme’s free tier was retired. While we transition between carbon accounting platforms, we remain committed to manual data collection to ensure our historical tracking remains accurate.

“Ecologi Zero takes your business transactions and assesses this information using complex input-output tables, which produce emissions values for your financial transactions, based on industry average emissions figures.”

In addition to automatically synchronised transactional data, we had the ability to manually input our energy consumption, report on how many days employees worked from home, and log business journeys taken by car.

Ballyhoo’s 2022 emissions breakdown

The vast majority of our emissions are Scope 3—value chain emissions that result from the goods and services that we purchase as part of our business operations.

We are actively looking at our suppliers to make green switches where possible in an effort to tackle our Scope 3 emissions.

The Search for a New Platform

Since Ecologi Zero’s beta programme was closed in June 2025 we have trialled several alternatives, but we are still looking for an affordable platform tailored for small businesses. Meanwhile our Climate Action Workforce subscription is still in place, so while we cannot accurately monitor our emissions at this time we are confident that we are avoiding more carbon emissions than we produce.

Our Workspace & Travel

Green Office Space

Since 2013, Ballyhoo has occupied a serviced office in Longbridge, Birmingham. Pure Offices have a net zero commitment and provide us with 100% renewable REGO regulated energy in addition to solar-generated energy from PV panels which were installed on the roof of the building in 2023.

Longbridge Innovation Centre building

Homeworking

Post-pandemic we are very much a hybrid workforce, adopting a flexible home working approach based on employee preferences and lifestyles. On average, 40% of our team work remotely with the occasional day in the office; the other 60% work in the office with the occasional day at home. Employees are encouraged to adopt energy-efficient practices in their working environments whether at home, in the office or elsewhere.

2023 Office Downsize

In light of our smaller in-office workforce, in late 2023 we took the decision to downsize our office space to a smaller unit within the same building, a reduction of approximately 200 square feet.

*Average 179 kWh per month pre-move (Q3 2023), compared to 153 kWh per month in Q3 2024.

2024 Energy Assessment

In 2024 we undertook a Standard Energy Assessment, conducted by Aston University as part of the Decarbonisation Net Zero Programme to provide a baseline for energy usage and offer recommendations for improving efficiency. This focused on steps we could take within our office environment to reduce energy consumption.

The Ballyhoo office was deemed very energy efficient; however, the assessment revealed a few areas for improvement, notably an investment in newer monitors, which would result in a saving of 0.02 tCO2 per year.

*An average of 109 kWh per month Q3 2025, compared to 153 kWh per month in Q3 2024.

Transport

A key reason for choosing our business premises is its excellent public transport links, with several bus routes and a rail station within walking distance.

Commuting

Employees are encouraged to take advantage of public transport services where possible and we operate a cycle to work scheme in which employees are encouraged to take up commuting by bicycle for both their own and the planet’s wellbeing.

We are committed to reducing the consumption of fossil fuels; business vehicle leases have been limited to electric vehicles since 2022. On-site electric car charging is available for employee use. This facility is provided and maintained by our landlord Pure Offices.

Business Travel

In recent years, our business transport needs have reduced dramatically, with the vast majority of client meetings now taking place over video call. However, should a face-to-face meeting be necessary, it is our policy to use public transport when feasible. The same applies to events including conferences and team days.

Waste & Resource Reduction

We focus on tangible actions within our physical environment to reduce energy consumption and waste.

  • Paperless Operations – We use paperless communication, such as email and telephone, to communicate with our customers and suppliers.
  • Energy Efficiency – LED lights within our office use motion sensors to ensure they are only in use when needed, air conditioning is on a timer and electrical appliances are only powered when in use.
  • Recycling & Waste – Anything that can be recycled will be. We operate a recycling scheme in the office whereby paper that has no further use is collected and plastics and metals are separated and recycled. Items like printer cartridges and batteries are also disposed of to recycling plants. Faulty or obsolete computer equipment and hardware is collected by a WEEE compliant green recycling firm for secure destruction. Our building operates a food waste collection scheme.
  • Green IT Disposal – We sustainably dispose of equipment that we no longer need, previously organising a green IT disposal collection which we opened to other occupants of our serviced office building to encourage responsible recycling of computers, monitors, tablets and more.
  • Office Furniture Buyback – Much of our office furniture has been purchased from IKEA, so we regularly make use of their Buyback & Resell scheme to dispose of desks and other furniture we no longer need in our office. IKEA then resells these items in the second hand hub giving them a new lease of life.
  • Sustainable Sourcing – We exclusively use FSC-sourced paper and card for any necessary business stationery or printing.

Our Digital Footprint

We view technology as a powerful force for change; when we talk about technological sustainability, we mean we use digital services where possible and we are prepared to be early adopters of new technologies which provide a better path forward for our business and yours. We aim to work with suppliers who have a strong sustainability focus, passing on the benefits of these to our clients.

Sustainable Web Design

Sustainable web design is the practice of developing and deploying websites with minimal environmental impact, primarily by optimising for low energy consumption and efficient data transfer. This involves a range of techniques, such as prioritising clean hosting that runs on renewable energy, optimising imagery and code to reduce file size and loading times, and ensuring that website infrastructure is as lean as possible.

First and foremost, by focusing on performance and efficiency in our website projects, sustainable web design helps reduce the carbon footprint associated with the internet, contributing to a greener digital future for us and our clients.

Green Web Directory

Ballyhoo’s website hosting is Green certified, meaning our website and our clients’ websites run on renewable energy.

As a hosting provider, we are proud that both our website and our clients’ websites are all hosted on Green servers that use renewable energy, and that our hosting infrastructure has produced 0.0 MTCO2e carbon emissions since 2020.

Our Green hosting is accredited on the Green Web Directory, powered by The Green Web Foundation—an independent non-profit that tracks how much of the internet runs on green energy and aims for a fossil-free internet by 2030.

Stripe Climate

One of our payment processing partners, Stripe, offers an initiative that allows vendors to donate 1% of all transactions towards carbon removal technologies.

Ballyhoo have committed to Stripe Climate which will apply to any invoices paid online by our clients.

Stripe is widely integrated on the websites we build—any that require payment processing such as e-commerce stores and online booking systems. As such, client participation in this scheme is being encouraged via awareness campaigns and the option to engage Stripe Climate will be also highlighted during new client onboarding.

Our Social Responsibility

Social responsibility is characterised as business choices that we make to promote and achieve a better balance for people and planet. We are proud to put our name to initiatives that raise awareness as well as make long-term commitments to build a better business.

Clean Creatives

Ballyhoo have taken the Clean Creatives pledge—committing to not working with fossil fuel polluters for a sustainable future for the creative industry.

Fossil fuel corporations are the world’s leading polluters, and by agreeing not to work with them, we can ensure that we are helping the planet and environment.

Living Wage Foundation

At Ballyhoo we are a Living Wage Employer, meaning we have chosen to pay all employees a wage that they and their families can live on – giving them a fair and decent pay.

The living wage is a voluntary rate which employers can choose to pay, which is independently calculated to reflect the actual cost of living in the UK.

Paying the Living Wage is a good indication of the core values of a business, and we are proud of our beliefs and company culture.

Better Business Act

We’ve signed a pledge to support the Better Business Act. This scheme is a collection of like-minded businesses aiming to transform the way that we do business in the UK, taking ownership of our social and environmental impact.

The Better Business Act is calling on the government to change Section 172 of the Companies Act to ensure that company directors are responsible for advancing the interests of shareholders alongside society and the environment.

The Better Business Act is driven by leaders who recognise that the law has fallen behind business culture and who have proven that this approach to business works for everyone.

Sustainable Pensions

As part of our commitment to ethical and social responsibility, we offer our employees the option to invest their workplace pension through an ethical fund provided by our partner, NEST. This initiative allows our team to ensure their long-term financial planning aligns with our collective values of environmental conscience by choosing investments that prioritise positive social and environmental impact.

Our Targets

We aren’t perfect, and we know that as a small business, we can’t change the whole world overnight. However, we are committed to doing our bit by focusing on three clear goals:

1. Balancing Our Impact (Carbon Neutral)

Until we can stop producing emissions entirely, we will take responsibility for what we do create.

  • The Plan: We will keep tracking our carbon footprint as best we can.
  • The Action: Every year, we will fund enough climate projects (like tree planting and wind farms) to “offset” the carbon we’ve produced. This makes us Carbon Neutral—balancing the scales while we work on the bigger stuff.

2. Choosing Greener Partners

Most of our carbon footprint comes from the things we buy and the services we use. We can’t control how these companies work, but we can control who we give our money to.

  • The Plan: When it’s time to renew a contract or buy new kit, we will check if the supplier has a green policy.
  • The Action: If we have to choose between two similar suppliers, we will pick the one that is doing more for the planet. Over time, this will naturally “clean up” our business.

3. Staying Efficient

We will keep our office footprint small and our energy use low.

  • The Action: We’ve already downsized our office and switched to renewable energy. Moving forward, we’ll focus on simple wins—like choosing energy-saving monitors when our old ones need replacing and keeping our hybrid-working model to reduce unnecessary commuting.

Our Promise

We promise to continue these activities in the daily management of our business and aim to adopt any new environmentally-friendly technologies and initiatives as they become available.

We hope that through these steps, we will ensure we are doing all that is conceivably possible as a modern business to preserve natural resources and contribute to making the Earth sustainable for future generations.
