Google Hangouts Moving to Google Chat

From 1st November 2022, Google Hangouts on web will start directing to Google Chat on web. From this date, Google Hangouts will no longer be available.

Google Hangouts Changes

Google Chat will become the default chat app on Google, with Hangouts in web and Chrome extensions redirecting to Chat.

Here are a few other changes that are a part of this update:

  • Searching for Chats – From 1st November, users will only find results for Hangouts and Chat messages under the ‘Messages’ tab when searching in Gmail. From 1st January 2023, all Hangouts and Chat search results will be removed from the Mail tab in Gmail
  • Exporting data – From 1st November, new Chat messages will no longer be available in the Data Export Tools for Hangouts and Chat. If your company uses Vault, you can search for Hangouts and Chat messages under Chat only
  • Domain transfer – From 1st January 2023, Hangouts data will be unsupported for domain transfer
  • Apps Monthly Uptime Dashboard – From 1st November 2023, this feature will no longer list Hangouts

Action Required

If you wish to keep a copy of your Hangouts conversations, you can export your company’s data and enable your users to use Google Takeout to download Hangouts data before 1st January 2023. You may also wish to notify your users that from 1st November 2022, they will not be able to access Hangouts.
