How to Receive From An Alias Email in Gmail

Google Workspace | |

Managing several email addresses within a single inbox is made easy by setting up email aliases. We frequently receive questions about receiving emails to an alias – here’s everything you need to know.

What is an Alias Email?

An email alias is a convenient alternative address that directs all incoming mail to your primary inbox. This avoids the need to create a completely new account. Essentially, it functions as a forwarding address, enabling you to use a different “nickname” email for various purposes.

Why Receive to an Alias

An alias serves as a virtual address, funnelling all incoming messages to your main inbox. This eliminates the need for a completely separate mailbox. There are many reasons you may want to use aliases in the course of running a business:

  • Professionalism: provide role-based email addresses that project professionalism, even if the emails all come through to just one person. Examples include accounts@, careers@, hr@.
  • Anonymity: use aliases for anonymity when signing up to services or newsletters, without having to give out your personal email address.
  • Workflows: have alias emails for support, enquiries or even specific project names, that can be directed to certain team members as needed or easily searched and filtered in your inbox.
